Today we met at the LJMU Student Union to discuss whether it be suitable as an alternative space to the unavailable and potentially unreliable, Wolstenholme.
The advantages of using the Union to exhibit would be that it would be reliable in the fact that it is open every day, and we will be able to get as much help and possible funding that we will need.
However, the space we were presented with was a couple of bland corridors and 2 or 3 meeting rooms. These rooms would be ideal for a select few of the group to show their videos and installations, as it would be able to create a much more intimate atmosphere for the viewers’ experience. But the wall space which would be house my own work along the corridors is less than desirable. It carries connotations of a school/office look, and I feel that any wall hangings (photos, paintings, prints ect.) would just blend into the surroundings, acting as decoration rather than an exhibition. I am also sceptical about the popularity of art amongst the student community, and whether people would take the effort to visit the Union and search through the maze of corridors to find our exhibition.
We have another meeting on Friday with Peter where, together, we will consider the space and discuss the next steps to take.
