Following my Fine Art interests, I have decided to form my dissertation around the subject of digital photography. The suggested title of the piece is:
The Relevance of Digital Photography Within Contemporary Art.
As a relatively new technology within the art culture, I intend to explore the diverse approaches that have been explored using an instrument that can create such instant and easily manufactured products of art. With digital cameras making their way into the most portable and inexpensive forms such and compact cameras and mobile phones, which allow almost anybody to produce images, I will assess the validation of this digital media and what constitutes as contemporary art.
Also with the use of photo manipulation computer programmes such as Adobe Photoshop, individuals are able to fix and completely transform the components of their images thus creating the argument that photographs can no longer be trusted to accurately represent a scene. As the artist David Hockney says, “Computer manipulation means that it’s no longer possible to believe that a photograph represents a specific object in a specific place at a specific time- to believe that it is objective and ’true.’” (Cited in Photography Reborn: Image Making in the Digital Era. By Jonathan Lipkin).
